Children are Discussing with Art – Refugees and Immigrants

The project, implemented by the 32nd Primary School of Piraeus, serves as a profound example of how art and science can be integrated to explore complex social issues such as migration and refugee experiences. Guided by the Leonardo 4 Children Academy principles, this interdisciplinary project engaged 22 students aged 11, including those with special educational needs and diverse backgrounds, in a two-month journey of empathy, learning, and creative expression.

Through the use of art, history, social studies, and digital tools, students explored the causes and consequences of forced migration, developing critical thinking, empathy, and social awareness. Artistic expressions, such as visual art, multimedia presentations, and storytelling, enabled students to process the harsh realities of displacement while fostering emotional connections to the themes of peace and equality. Science and social studies provided the factual grounding needed to understand global conflicts and migration trends, making abstract concepts tangible and meaningful.

Small heroes, big mission: Saving the oceans with technology

The Learning scenario engages children in addressing environmental challenges through activities such as creating a beach robot, robot ship, solar lighthouse, desalination plant, and robotic fish using materials like LEGO bricks, microbit, gigo microbit, sensors, and recyclable materials. These projects promote sustainability and renewable energy, aligning with climate action goals. Students develop various skills and attitudes, including knowledge of art & science, social and emotional skills, communication skills, and positive attitudes toward environmental conservation. Artistic expression through creating a model landscape from recyclable materials fosters creativity, empathy, and communication, inspiring connection to the environment and reinforcing the urgency of conservation efforts.

BAS

The BAS app promotes climate awareness and sustainability by encouraging small, daily changes in behavior that contribute to protecting nature. Students were empowered to take responsibility, share knowledge, and influence their peers, promoting environmental equality and inclusion.

Nile in Trouble – Ancient Solutions, Modern Ideas

The project “Nile in Trouble – Ancient Solutions, Modern Ideas” engages 11-12-year-old students in exploring how ancient Egyptians coped with challenges when the Nile River dried up. By conducting research, working in groups, and giving presentations, students gain insights into the historical importance of the Nile and its relevance today. The project helps develop various skills and attitudes, including knowledge, art & science skills, social skills, emotional skills, communication skills, and environmental awareness. The collaboration between Ancient Civilization and STEM Science classes proves beneficial in providing comprehensive learning experiences.

Aleksander Pushkin Gymnasium, Vilnius

The concert “Leonardo 4 Children”

The concert strongly connected with climate and equality themes by highlighting the importance of protecting nature and promoting harmony among people. The performances beautifully portrayed elements of nature such as water, air, earth, and space, emphasizing our deep connection to the environment. Additionally, songs from different cultures—Lithuanian, Russian, and Ukrainian—celebrated diversity and unity, reinforcing the message of equality. Through music, dance, and storytelling, the event inspired awareness of environmental issues and social responsibility, encouraging the audience to work towards a sustainable and fair future.

Greenhouse effect

In this activity, 7th-grade students at Vilnius Alexander Pushkin Gymnasium studied the greenhouse effect, focusing on both natural and anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gases. They explored how volcanic activity and human actions contribute to climate change. To illustrate these concepts, students created volcano models, blending biology, geography, and crafts, and presenting their findings to deepen their understanding of climate-related topics.

Istituto Comprensivo P. Levi, Florence

A Journey Among the Stars

The case study describes an interdisciplinary educational project conducted by IC Primo Levi di Impruneta with 11-year-old students. Over two months, students integrated science, art, literature, and technology to explore astronomy and mythology by creating their own constellations and mythological stories. Using tools like cardboard telescopes, lapbooks, and digital platforms, they visualized constellations, projected them in dark rooms, and linked them to the contributions of female astronomers. The project emphasized creativity, collaboration, and inclusion—especially supporting a student using AAC—while fostering scientific curiosity, expressive communication, and appreciation for gender equality in science.

Water becomes poetry

Caviardage method (created by Tina Festa which includes different poetic writing techniques which consist of elaborating and creating poems starting from already written texts such as newspaper sheets or pages of waste books.

1) Children bring out poems from random texts (a few sentences).

2) We give the children various poems and nursery rhymes with the theme of water, the children give life to their little poem which will be used to create a poster.

Lycée Français Jean-Monnet, Brussels

Art Week

This case study, provided by Lycée Français Jean-Monnet, focused on important issues, such as gender equality, ecology, and the connection between art and science. Students were encouraged to reflect on on social issues and artistic creations, fostering a deeper understading of these major challenges. As a result, the creativity of children and teenager was stimulated to use art as a tool of dialogue and change.

Art Week

During the art week, professionals in cinema and visual arts were invited to the school to discuss important issues, such as gender equality, ecology, and the connection between art and science. These professionals provided a lively and engaged perspective, offering students concrete examples. They encouraged reflections on social issues, artistic creations, fostering a deeper understading of these major challenges. This approached enriched learning, stimulated creativity and raised students’ awareness on art as a tool of dialogue and change.
